Finding out that your child has an upper limb difference can bring a whirlwind of emotions. Whether you received a diagnosis during pregnancy or after birth, it’s completely natural to have questions about what the future holds.
The good news is that you don’t have to navigate this journey alone. At Reach we support children and people with upper limb differences and their families by providing information, practical guidance, opportunities to connect with others, and a welcoming community family that understands your experience.
What Is an Upper Limb Difference (ULD)?
When we refer Upper Limb Difference we talk about ‘congenital difference’, from birth, or ‘acquired difference’ at any stage of life.
Congenital hand differences (CHDs) occur when a child is born with a hand that had formed differently. This happens in up to 1 in 2,000 live births. Please note that we prefer the term ‘differences’ rather than ‘abnormalities’ because that is exactly what it means, i.e., it is just ‘different’ rather than ‘abnormal’.
Reach children, young people and adults with upper limb differences lead active, independent lives, taking part in school, sports, hobbies, and everyday activities. While they may face challenges, the right support can make a significant difference.
The Early Days: What Parents Often Experience
When parents first learn about their child’s upper limb difference, they often experience a mix of emotions, including:
- Shock or uncertainty
- Worry about their child’s future
- Feelings of guilt
- Questions about medical treatment or prosthetics
- Concerns about early years (Development, surgery, crawling, starting school, bullying etc.)
- Wondering how others will react
- Feeling isolated because they don’t know anyone in a similar situation
These feelings are common, and many families tell us that speaking to others who have shared similar experiences helps them feel more confident and understood.
How the Charity Reach supports families
Reach has been supporting families for decades. We understand that support isn’t just about information—it’s about connection, reassurance, and building confidence.
Reach Family Events & Meet-ups
One of the most valuable aspects of Reach is the opportunity to meet other families.
We have branches all over the UK, find your nearest branch here.
Our branch meet ups, regional weekends, camps and family events bring together children, parents, siblings, and adults with upper limb differences in a relaxed and supportive environment. Children quickly make friends, while parents can speak openly with others who truly understand.
Lifelong friendships begin at Reach events.

Sometimes, simply knowing someone else has experienced the same worries can make all the difference.

Helping Children Build Confidence
Confidence often grows when children see others who look like them.
Meeting older children and adults with upper limb differences helps younger members realise what’s possible. Whether it’s playing an instrument, climbing, swimming, driving, or pursuing a dream career, positive role models show children that a limb difference does not define their future.
Why Connecting with Other Families Matters
Many parents tell us that before finding Reach, they had never met anyone with Upper Limb Difference.
Meeting people with shared lived experiences helps reduce feelings of isolation and creates a sense of belonging. Children gain confidence by making friends who understand their experiences naturally, while parents find reassurance through honest conversations with others who have been there.
These connections often become one of the most valuable sources of support throughout childhood and beyond.
