This April, a powerful new movement is shining a spotlight on limb loss and limb difference across the UK — and it’s powered directly by the voices of the community. The Limb Loss and Limb Difference Alliance — formed by Reach, Finding Your Feet, LimbPower, Steel Bones, Amputation Foundation and Blesma — has launched its first national awareness campaign, bringing these leading charities together for the very first time.
💬 Uniting Stories. Challenging Myths. Celebrating Identity.
Throughout April, the Alliance is sharing a vibrant series of short videos across social media — from “Passing the Emoji” to “Myth Busting,” “Challenges,” and “Real Questions” — all spotlighting real experiences of life with limb loss and limb difference.
The campaign comes at a crucial time:
- 12,000+ major amputations take place each year in NHS England.
- 1 in 1,900 babies are born with a limb difference.
Despite the growing need, access to specialist services and prosthetic support still varies widely across the UK. The Alliance is calling for improved services, visibility and understanding.
👥 “This is about visibility, understanding and connection.”
By coming together, the Alliance aims to highlight the strength, resilience and diversity of the limb difference community — while challenging misconceptions and celebrating identity.
🏛️ Taking the Conversation to Parliament – 14 April
The campaign will culminate in a special Westminster event hosted with the support of Marie Tidball MP. The event will bring together:
- people with lived experience
- charities and advocates
- healthcare professionals
- political leaders including Lord Craig Mackinlay, Health Secretary Wes Streeting, actor Melissa Johns, and Dr Cor Hutton MBE BCAc DL
The day will highlight the barriers people face and explore how they can be removed for good, while celebrating community, identity and visibility.
📘 Why Awareness Matters
The Alliance will also be sharing key facts throughout the month — including the physical realities that often go unseen. For example, above‑knee amputees may use up to 60–100% more energy when walking.
Another focus is language: how small changes in the words we use can make a huge difference in creating a more inclusive and respectful society.
🌈 A Month of Community. A Future of Change.
“By coming together, we can build a more inclusive, accessible and informed society.”
