Kent Branch

Spring Reach Kent Event; Chartham Hatch, Saturday 29th May 2010

I recently contacted many of you by e-mail about the above event and, following your response, I have confirmed that we can go ahead with it, with free places available for the children, including a  lunch for them at the Chapter Arms in Chartham Hatch. I suggest that we meet up there from 11.30 a.m. There are acres of gardens for the children to play in and the pub is very child-friendly, so we can eat inside or in the gardens, depending on the weather. From the pub, we hope to go on an hour’s  ‘bluebell walk’ around the Hatch to ‘No Man’s Orchard’ and the children’s play area, followed by tea, juice and snacks at the Village Hall (The Old School) from about 2.30 to 5.30 p.m., with a ‘goody bag’ for each child. This should give parents the chance to chat informally and exchange information and advice, something that new parents in particular have requested. I have tried to get a suitable children’s entertainer, as yet without success. However, I’m sure we can make our own entertainment! If the weather is wet, we can stay in the pub and then move on to the Hall for about 2.00 p.m., leaving our cars there. There is limited parking at the Hall, if you want to join us there, and the play area is just along Bigbury Road. So, if you can’t join us for lunch, you can always meet up with us later.

I will allocate lunch places to the children of those who have already responded, but would be grateful if you could all confirm by returning the slip below by Saturday 22nd May, so I can inform the pub of numbers of adults and children wishing to eat. For those receiving these details by e-mail, I’m attaching details about the Chapter Arms, with some sample lunch menus for adults, together with details of location. Those receiving this by post can visit the pub’s web-site at www.chapterarms.com for further details.

The Chapter Arms is located off the A28 between Chilham and Canterbury. If you’re approaching from Canterbury, follow the A28 towards Chartham, around the roundabout to the right, over the river Stour and railway bridges, round the sharp left bend, turning first right into Howfield Lane, signposted Chatham Hatch. Follow the lane up the hill, past Howfield Farm, under the railway bridge and into the Hatch. New Town Street is on your left and the Chapter Arms is about a hundred yards along this on the right. There is a large car-park. From Ashford or Challock/ Chilham, follow the A28 towards Chartham past the Shalmsford Street turn, until you see the sign for the railway station and village on your right. Turn left immediately after this into Hatch Lane and continue up the hill and over the level crossing, turning right into New Town Street at the Oast House. The Chapter Arms is on your left after a quarter mile. If you’re coming in from the A2 to the north of Canterbury, there is an alternative route via Harbledown which, although shorter, is very winding and narrow. If you have any queries or problems, don’t hesitate to contact me before the event at the address/ e-mail/ phone no. detailed above, or on the day on my mobile no. 07766 521946.

I look forward to meeting you (again) on that Saturday.

Sincerely,
